What is a lactation consultant?
A lactation consultant is a trained healthcare professional who provides expert guidance on breastfeeding technique, positioning, and solutions for common feeding challenges.
A lactation consultant specializes in helping mothers establish and maintain breastfeeding. They work with new mothers to teach correct latch and positioning, assess milk supply, diagnose and treat common problems like engorgement or mastitis, and provide emotional support during the feeding journey. Many lactation consultants also advise on expressing, storage, and returning to work while breastfeeding.
The gold standard credential is the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification, which requires hundreds of hours of supervised practice, clinical experience, and a rigorous exam. In Malaysia, certified lactation consultants may work in hospitals, private clinics, or confinement centers and postnatal care facilities. Some operate independently and offer home visits or telehealth consultations.
Lactation consultants differ from midwives or general nurses in their specialized training and depth of knowledge. They are particularly valuable during the first weeks after birth when breastfeeding challenges are most common, and they continue to support mothers throughout their breastfeeding goals. Consultation is typically recommended if a mother experiences pain, difficulty latching, concerns about milk production, or wants to optimize feeding for her circumstances.
