What is the Lamaze method?

The Lamaze method is a childbirth preparation technique that uses controlled breathing, relaxation techniques, and continuous support to help manage labor pain and promote active participation during delivery.

The Lamaze method originated in the 1950s when French obstetrician Fernand Lamaze adapted Soviet childbirth practices and introduced them to Western maternity care. The approach centers on three core elements: deep breathing patterns, progressive muscle relaxation, and the presence of a trained support person (coach) during labor. Rather than relying on pain medication, the technique teaches expectant parents to work with their body's natural responses and maintain focus during contractions.

Controlled breathing serves as the method's foundation. Participants learn slow, rhythmic breathing patterns for early labor and faster techniques as contractions intensify. This focus on breath helps redirect attention away from pain while maintaining oxygen flow to the mother and baby. Relaxation training complements breathing work, teaching mothers to release tension from specific muscle groups and recognize the difference between muscle tension and relaxation.

The method also emphasizes informed decision-making and working as a birth partner team. Support persons learn comfort measures such as positioning changes, massage, and verbal encouragement. Lamaze classes stress that women have choices in their birth experience and that understanding labor progression helps them feel more in control.

Many prenatal classes in Kuala Lumpur incorporate Lamaze principles alongside other evidence-based birth preparation techniques. While no longer positioned as a pain-elimination method, Lamaze remains valued as a way to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and encourage active participation in the birth process.
